As lawmakers weigh the need for state funding to combat the emerald ash borer in Legislative Bill 71, communities across the state are calling attention to the need for tree diversity to ward against future outbreaks of tree pests and diseases.

The Nebraska Forest Service estimates that, since 1970, the state has lost over 50 percent of its community trees.
